Santiago Falasca to sail at first ISAF Youth Worlds

by ISAF on 12 Jun 2013
Santiago Falasca training in Argentina Yacht Club Argentino http://www.yca.org.ar/
Having qualifying for the Sail First ISAF Youth Worlds in February, Santiago Falasca's (ARG) preparations for the event are on the right track. Falasca will be sailing at his first ISAF Youth Worlds in the 56-boat Laser Radial Boys fleet and having taken the Argentinean spot in Mar del Plata his preparations began instantly, 'From that moment with my coach Alejo Fernández Sosa, I have been preparing hard to do well in the Championship. 'Many hours on the water, physical training, a lot of swimming and bike rides are helping me to get to the ideal weight for the Laser Radial in July. 'Without the support of the Yacht Club Argentino, the Secretaría de Deportes de la Nación, the ENARD and of course my family, neither the preparation nor the trip would be possible.' Falasca won the Under 18 Laser Standard World Championship in 2012 and has put in steady performances at the Central and South American Laser Championships in 2011 and in 2012 and he's ready for the challenge ahead, 'I'm very excited to compete in this new edition of the Sail First ISAF Youth Worlds. This year I turn 18 and therefore it becomes a unique opportunity to be part of such an important event. 'I want to go home after this championship knowing that I did everything in my power to achieve the best possible result. If that happens, I'll be satisfied. It is difficult to predict a result without knowing most of my competitors, but getting a position within the first 10 would be very rewarding.' The 2013 Laser Radial Boy's fleet features some exciting new talent including New Zealand's Andrew McKenzie and Ireland's Robbie Gilmore who will challenge for top honours. 2012 Champion Mark Spearman returns to the event to defend his title but Falasca will focus on what he needs to do come race time, 'Mark Spearman is clearly one of the candidates to get the gold in Cyprus and is also a great example of the championship level. 'To achieve the best possible result I must focus on myself, race by race and at the end we'll see who takes the victory. I still have a month ahead and with the correct preparation, no one is unbeatable.' Racing across eight classes is scheduled to start on Monday 15 July in Limassol, Cyprus running through to Friday 19 July.

The Laser Radial Boys fleet features 54 sailors.
