Australia’s next group of gold medal winning and World Championship coaches have been developing their skills at a special course in Sydney.

The group of coaches, drawn from State and Paralympic programs, are undertaking the first Performance Coach Program, held at the National Training Centre at Middle Harbour Yacht Club.

The Program has been developed by Australian Sailing, the performance program of Yachting Australia in partnership with the Australian Institute of Sport. It features considerable input from, and is presented by, its group of national coaches and Sports Science and Sports Medicine professionals.

The Performance Coach Program is the first step in a new coach development program being developed by Australian Sailing to impart the latest sailing-specific coaching knowledge to those currently, or aspiring to be, involved in coaching within the State Sailing Performance Programs.

The Program complements the class-specific workshops commenced over the past 12 months that will also form part of the Performance Coach accreditation process.

The Performance Coach program consists of pre-course profile testing and background study, a four-day theory and practical course which was held at the National Training Centre over the weekend, followed by mentoring under National and State Performance Coaches over a period of six to 12 months. Objective practical assessment in line with competency based training standards completes the program, which will be registered with the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS).

Australian Sailing Performance Director Peter Conde said that development of the Performance Coach Program is an important step in creating Australia’s next group of leading coaches.

'With the implementation of the Performance Coach Program we’re able to develop world-class coaches throughout our pathway,' said Conde. 'The Performance Coach Program provides a consistent method of training coaches and will strengthen the coaching pathway at all levels. We intend to run this program on a regular basis as required.'
