Tornado European Championships - Roland and Nahid on top after day 2

by Andrew Dowley on 19 May 2013
2013 Tornado European Championships Martina Barnetova
The second day of the Tornado European Championships began beautifully in the picturesque location of Lake Constance, Austria. The sailors arrived to a sunny day with a steady breeze ready for racing. Unfortunately this wasn’t to hold with a big variety of wind and weather changing throughout the day.

The first race started in light conditions but had to be cancelled due to a change in wind direction. The second race was completed in light winds with the Greek team of Nikos and Alex taking the win, they were followed by Iordanis Pachalidis and Kostas Trigonis. Roland and Nahid Gaebler took third place.

Another race was started but had to be cancelled after two laps due to the wind disappearing. The sailors were sent back to the shore to await further instructions.

The wind built around 2pm and the teams went out onto the water for another three races. The first of the afternoon race was again cancelled because of a change in direction, Team Gaebler were storming ahead until the increase in wind and change in direction half way through the second lap.

The wind was building all afternoon with the next races sailed in around 20knots with big gust across the race course. There was slightly less wind in the last race of the day which was much needed after a long day on the water. Top marks to the race committee for their persistence.

This evening everyone has enjoyed a traditional Austrian meal at the restaurant on site.

Tomorrow another four races are scheduled.

Overall Results So Far

1st Place – Roland and Nahid Gaebler
2nd Place – Iordanis Paschalidis and Kostas Trigonis
