Multiple classes to descend on WPNSA for National Championships

by Jessica Francis on 18 May 2013 The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) is anticipating welcoming a number of familiar and new sailing enthusiasts to race on the Olympic waters this coming summer. The Topper Class has already hosted a number their main training events on site this year and the Academy is now looking ahead to their National Championships in August as well as an array of National events for a variety of highly active class associations.

Tom Dixon, International Topper Class Association Chairman commented on the importance of the WPNSA, 'the Topper Class originally chose the WPNSA as we see this venue as the National Sailing Centre and our class requires top rate international sailing facilities for our sailors that the Academy provides. It is a superb sailing venue with a great team. We visit several times per year for racing and squad training, we even had the last but one race on site before the Olympics started last summer.'

The RS Tera, Flying Fifteen, Topper and Hurricane / F18 Classes will all be descending on the Academy for their National Championships in the coming months.

Hurricane / F18 fleets are thrilled to be bringing their fleet to sail at WPNSA for the first time, 'after the huge success of the 2012 Olympics; it is great to be part of the legacy and to motivate and inspire the younger members of our fleet to sail in the wake of giants.' For the vastly popular youth based RS Tera Class this will be their first Championship event at the Academy when they visit for their National Championships during June and World Championships in July. Ian Jameson Class Manager is delighted to be holding the Championships in Weymouth, 'it is an ideal venue for the class, offering world class facilities and some fantastic sailing waters, it has been a great topic of discussion in the dingy park, the children have seen the venue on the television and on-line in the press and are all very excited to be coming.' The Flying Fifteen Fleet also returns to Weymouth and Portland waters during July after a highly successful event in September 2010, when 40 teams turned out in brilliant breeze to compete for the UK Southern Championships.
