The sailing world is very much in shock following the death of British Olympic Gold and Silver medallist and America's Cup strategist Andrew 'Bart' Simpson trapped under water after the capsize of the Swedish AC72 Artemis on San Francisco Bay last Thursday.

Tony Outteridge, father of Artemis Racing´s Australian helmsman Nathan Outteridge, told his local newspaper the Newcastle Herald ‘Nathan called us to let us know he was OK before we found out about what had happened another way,’

Outteridge, with Iain Jensen, his 49er Olympic Gold Medal crew as a sail trimmer, fellow Australian Rodney Daniel along with Simpson and other Artemis crew were on board the Swedish racing team’s America’s Cup catamaran about 800 metres north of San Francisco Bay´s Treasure Island at 1.15pm on Thursday last, when the fatal accident occurred..

He said his son is distraught. 'He's not very good. He's said it's the worst day of his life. A good mate dead. '

Nathan Outteridge has since issued this statement 'The description of the accident in the Newcastle Herald while quoting my father is not correct and does not reflect the facts. Unfortunately it has been relayed by other media. Right now, we are all still mourning and working to understand what happened. I hope everyone can respect this and I thank all those who have expressed support.'

Stephen Barclay, chief executive of America’s Cup Event Authority announced during an international press conference on Friday. 'AC34 Regatta Director Iain Murray is going to lead a review into what happened during Thursday’s training accident. Iain will conduct the review and will liaise with the San Francisco Police Department and the United States Coast Guard and any other third-party experts as necessary.'
