Mark Asquith named National Team Coach

Sail Canada/Voile Canada is happy to announce the appointment of Mark Asquith as a National Team Coach. Mark will take up his role on May 1st, joining the coaching team of Steve Mitchell, Erik Stibbe and Chris Cook, under the leadership of Sail Canada's High Performance Director Ken Dool.

Mark brings a wealth of sailing experience from his time on Team GBR, combining 11 years of top level campaigning in the 49er with coaching the GBR 29er team, as well as work with the sailing teams of Mexico, Sweden Bermuda and Canada.

Mark will take charge of the Canadian Sailing Team's Skiff program, developing campaigns in both the 49er and FX classes. He will be based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he will also act as Lead Coach for the Canadian Sport Centre, Atlantic as well as assisting the Nova Scotia Yachting Association with their High Performance program.

Chair of Sail Canada's Athlete Development Committee, Phil Gow, noted that strengthening the coaching team was identified as a key priority of Sail Canada's High Performance Strategy. 'Mark will bring an added dimension to high performance sailing for Sail Canada, Nova Scotia and skiff sailing. World class coaches are fundamental to competing effectively at the highest level.'

Sail Canada's High Performance Director Ken Dool said 'We are determined to enhance the coaching environment for our sailors. Mark's skiff class experience will undoubtedly raise the bar in the 49er and FX classes.'

Ken Bagnell, President, Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic, and Frank Denis, Executive Director, Nova Scotia Yachting Association, both expressed their delight at the appointment. Ken said 'the CSCA is pleased to welcome another world class coach to Atlantic Canada. The leadership from Mark will help our sailors achieve even greater success at the international level.'

Alan Lombard, Sail Canada President, said: 'This is a great step forward for skiff sailing in Canada.'

The appointments have been resourced with assistance from Own The Podium through Sport Canada's Sport support program.

Sail Canada/Voile Canada a le plaisir d'annoncer la nomination de Mark Asquith au poste d'entraîneur de l'équipe nationale.

Mark assumera ses fonctions le 1er mai prochain, en se joignant à l'équipe d'entraîneurs réunissant Steve Mitchell, Erik Stibbe et Chris Cook, sous la direction du directeur du sport de haut niveau de Voile Canada, Ken Dool.

Mark compte de nombreuses années d'expérience de la voile, depuis l'époque où il faisait partie de l'équipe GBR, soit 11 ans de participation active de haut niveau dans la catégorie 49er, tout en étant entraîneur de l'équipe 29er GBR; il a également travaillé auprès des équipes de voile du Mexique, de la Suède, des Bermudes et du Canada.

Mark sera responsable du programme de skiff de l'équipe canadienne de voile, et contribuera au développement d'activités dans les catégories 49er et FX. Il s'installera à Halifax, en Nouvelle-Écosse, où il sera également entraîneur responsable au Centre canadien multisport de l'Atlantique et conseiller auprès de l'Association provinciale de yachting de la Nouvelle-Écosse, plus précisément en ce qui a trait au programme de sport de haut niveau.

Le président du comité de développement des athlètes de Voile Canada, Phil Gow, fait remarquer qu'élargir le champ de compétences de l'équipe d'entraîneurs était l'une des priorités de la stratégie sur le sport de haut niveau de Voile Canada. 'Mark représente une valeur sûre pour la voile de haut niveau, pour Voile Canada, la Nouvelle-Écosse et le programme de skiff. Recruter des entraîneurs de calibre international est une réalité incontournable si nous voulons nous démarquer lors de compétitions de haut niveau.'

Le directeur du sport de haut niveau chez Voile Canada, Ken Dool, affirme 'Que nous sommes déterminés à offrir à nos athlètes le meilleur environnement possible pour se développer, aux côtés d'entraîneurs de qualité. Sans aucun doute, l'expérience de Mark en skiff ne pourra qu'être un atout de taille dans les catégories 49er et FX.'

Ken Bagnell, président du Centre canadien multisport de l'Atlantique et Frank Denis, directeur administratif de l'Association provinciale de yachting de la Nouvelle-Écosse se réjouissent tous les deux de cette nomination. Pour sa part Ken affirme que, 'le CCMA accueille à bras ouverts un autre entraîneur de renommée internationale au Canada atlantique. Les qualités de chef qu'il possède permettront à nos athlètes d'avoir encore plus de succès sur la scène internationale.'

Alan Lombard, président de Voile Canada, ajoute: 'C'est un pas de géant pour le skiff au Canada.'
