Olympian Chris Cook inducted into Whitby Sports Hall of Fame

Canadian Sailing Team - Olympian Chris Cook was inducted into the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club. Established in 1997,Chris Cook Whitby Hall of Fame the mandate is to recognize and honour the names and the accomplishments of individuals who have brought fame to the community of Whitby and to themselves through their athletic prowess and contributions to sport.

A member of the Canadian Sailing Team since 1997 Chris has earned numerous achievements in sailing including five top ten finishes in his Finn Class at the Open Finn Gold Cup (6th in 2001, third in 2005, ninth in 2006, seventh in 2007, and sixth in 2008).

Chris was also the North American Champion in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009, was awarded Sail Canada Male Athlete of the Year in 2001, and Canadian Rolex Sailor of the Year in 2005. In 2005 Chris achieved a world ranking of second in the Finn Class.

At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Chris represented Canada and sailed to a fifth place finish in the Finn class. In a special ceremony, the Town of Whitby presented Chris with a medal in recognition of his Olympic efforts.

In 2011 Chris returned to sailing after 3 years out of the sport. After securing a bronze medal at a World Cup event in Spain, Chris was on track for his second Olympics but was edged out by his upcoming protégée and fellow team member Greg Douglas.

Chris still remains immersed in the world of elite sailing as a National Team Coach at Sail Canada, heading up the development team. He is currently based in Toronto and working with Radial and Finn sailors. High Performance Director Ken Dool was in attendence and said 'It was a pleasure to see a deserving athlete included in an exclusive club of elite athletes and builders in Whitby'.

Chris was honored alongside Lacrosse legend John Fusco and builder Jim Brady.
