The 2013 Western Australian Mudlark State Championships were held recently at the Perth Dinghy Sailing Club.
The seven-race series was sailed in mostly gusty southerlies in the protection of Matilda Bay. Some of the children were competing for the first time, and for others, it was only their second regatta. Regardless, they all had a wonderful time under the supervision of the PDSC on-water crew and on-shore coordinator Jan Thomas.
The gold fleet was dominated by last year’s silver fleet winner; Thomas Devine. Thomas sailed Ca Plane Pour Moi in a fantastic regatta with seven bullets to be crowned 2013 State Champion.
Matthew Hanrahan in River Rat and Jonathon Everett in Mean Machine were second and third respectively. The silver fleet was won by Rosie Hennessy sailing Blondie in her first regatta.
The popular entry level Mudlark dinghy was developed in Western Australia by Wally Gaunt for WA weather and river conditions and is an easily sailed beginners boat catering for 6 to 11 year-olds. The affordable boat is both easily maintained and can be transported on the roof of the family car. Boats are easily righted after capsize and unlike the tub style boats, there is no sinking and no bailing is necessary.
