Over the weekend, the Melges 32 fleet were put to the test in some very challenging conditions at the Australian National Championships held out of Middle Harbour Yacht Club on Sydney Harbour.
Day one saw gusts of over 28 knots and some truly spectacular rides and wipe outs as the teams and boats were put to the test and pushed to the limits.
Day two and three saw the breeze moderate and swing through to the S/SE becoming quite shifty providing for some very tactical and close racing.
Boat speed through the wind range was key and the teams powered by North Sails CSD (Class Sail Development program) Melges 32 designs lead the way.
Greg Prescott and his team on board 2 Unlimited took out the regatta posting six wins out of the nine races. The 2 Unlimited team have been working closely with North Sails Australia to ensure they are geared up with the right sails to perform including a combination of the latest 3DL and 3Di CSD models.
The results certainly don't reflect how closely fought the regatta was with both the new team of Chris Way's Easy Tiger and Angus Reid's Max Star posting race wins through out the event.
The top five teams were all powered by North Sails and the Melges 32 class leaders Billy Sykes and Dave O'Connor will continue to regularly sail in the class this year to service the fleet and keep everyone up to date with all the latest sail developments.
