Round Haying Island Race 2013 - Hard-earned windsurfing hat-trick

by Gerald New on 31 Mar 2013
Round Haying Island Race 2013 - Fleet Gerald New http://www.sail-world.co.uk
Round Haying Island Race 2013 for Windsurfers was won by Robert Kent from Calshot Activity Centre, who made it a hat-trick of victories after a close tussle with Keith Atkinson. Second place went to James Moon and third to Matt Wemms. First lady was Annette Kent in fifth place overall. A cold easterly of just 12 to 15 knots meant that the record was never in danger.

Atkinson was first to shoot under the Langstone Road bridge at the top of Chichester Harbour, after 20 minutes of racing - rigs had to be dropped to slip under the bridge on the high water. Kent went under in second place but then caught Atkinson soon after they cleared the old Hayling railway bridge and started down Langstone Harbour.

Leaving LAngstone Harbour and turning left along Hayling Island seafront, Atkinson regained the lead, but as they turned back into Chichester Harbour the strong ebb tide slowed Atkinson, while Kent was able to maintain his speed and retain the title after one hour, 35 minutes and 30 sec.
