Wind, water and history converge as Tall Ships return to Chicago

by Nick Shields/Sail-World Cruising on 27 Mar 2013
Tall Ships Challenge® Race Series 2010 on Navy Pier in Chicago Tall Ships America http://www.tallshipsamerica.org/
If ever you wanted to be - or plan to be - in Chicago, this August is the time to do it. It's when tall ships from around the world will meet in Tall Ships® Chicago 2013.

Sponsored by Pepsi, the majestic maritime event that only occurs once every few years, is set for August 7 – 11, 2013. You'll not only be able to see these beauties up close, you'll be able to watch them strutting their stuff on the wide waters of Lake Michigan!

First, experience the thrill of seeing historic tall ships as the Tall Ships Chicago festival sails exclusively into Navy Pier Aug. 7 – 11. An opening day Tall Ship’s Parade of Sail will kick-off the festivities on Lake Michigan with Chicago’s magnificent skyline as a backdrop. This stunning spectacle will be unlike anything else in Chicago this summer. The 2013 Parade of Sail will showcase numerous tall ship vessels from around the world, including Norway and Canada.

The long-awaited return of Tall Ships to Chicago is an opportunity to sail away on a remarkable ship from across the globe. Guests will also have the opportunity to walk the festival grounds, view the Tall Ships, and board and tour participating vessels. This nautical event also includes fun-filled festivities and educational opportunities, so plan to stay the entire day or return over and over again with friends and family.

To add to the spectacle, joining Tall Ships Chicago for the first time is some racing, to add a measure of tension to the visit. It will be the Chicago Match Cup, a professional sailing competition and the only U.S. stop on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour. Twelve of the world’s best teams will sail against each other in match race sailing just feet from the edge of Navy Pier. They will compete for their share of the $100,000 prize purse and points earned toward the Tour’s overall World Championship, worth $1.75 million in prize money – the richest in the sailing world.

Navy Pier’s east end will be transformed to showcase the Tall Ships festival, promising front-row seats, hospitality areas and live commentary to best enjoy the thrills on the water. The festival area will include special family-friendly activities, on-board tours and sail-aways and a fireworks display each evening.
