The RYA Dinghy Show is currently underway at Alexandra Palace in North London, England. It was built in 1873 as a public centre of recreation, education and entertainment and as North London's counterpart to the Crystal Palace in South London.

Designed to be 'The People’s Palace' and later nicknamed 'Ally Pally' (allegedly by Gracie Fields), in 1936 it became the headquarters of the world's first regular public 'high-definition television service, operated by the BBC.

The venue is beautiful, but as an exhibition hall it needs a lot of TLC, but its major benefit is that is a low cost space for the dinghy industry shiwcase.

The RYA makes no profit from this Show but what it does do very well is bring industry and consumers together and they do it very successfully.

Today on a bleak British winter day, the Ally Pally was a warm haven. Here are more Sail-World images from the opening day today, Saturday 2nd March 2013.

It was nice to tick all that off in one day.” Kevin Shoebridge on ETNZ's Day 1 Splash and Sail We thought, 'We've got a bit of time. We'll pull the mainsail up'. Then we ended up going for a sail [and fitting in three dry foiling tacks]. It was nice to tick all that off in one day.” Kevin Shoebridge on ETNZ's Day 1 Splash and Sail.
