Moths will be 'In the Trees' at Walpole

by Yachting WA on 28 Feb 2013 The flutter of Western Australian Moths are moving away from the bright lights of Perth and are being attracted instead to the cool forests of the south west to sail their state championship this weekend.

Media lights will flash the high performance sailors on centre stage at the In the Trees Regatta to be held in Walpole this long weekend (2nd - 4th March 2013) where the ABC will be reporting. Unusually for reporters who generally flit in and flit straight out again, they will visit Walpole overnight in a bid to capture the full essence of the event - the on-water sailing element as well as the extensive social fabric.

With an eye on the 2015 Moth World Championships scheduled to be held down under, the WA Moths, in staging their state championships within the spectacular surrounds of the state’s south west, one of the top ten sailing destinations of the world, highlight the versatility of WA host clubs, communities and the variety of venues available in Western Australia for hosting world class events.

The In the Trees Regatta is an invitation regatta catering not only for the Moths sailing their state championships, but for all boats from dinghies to multihulls, in fact anyone who’d like to enjoy the whole experience of sailing on the Nornalup Inlet. Guests and sailors of all ages, with a range of sailing abilities and experience will be welcomed to participate in the regatta and social activities which have been planned by the Walpole community in support of the regatta. Further, the visiting sailing classes on display will also provide a show case for the members of the WPYC who may then determine which classes they wish to adopt for the club in the future.

There can be no greater show of community strength and solidarity than in the Walpole area where the community has rallied with the Department of Conservation to assist with the repair and reconstruction of the damaged Walpole Yacht Club. Despite this community effort, the WYC is still closed pending the pouring of bitumen in the car park and the ramp and unfortunately won’t be ready for the regatta hence sailing will be from the other end of Coalmine Beach where marquees will be erected to cater to the visitors. The Walpole Country Club has kindly offered to host the presentations, the grotty yachtie 'ball' and the social arrangements and the Community Resources Centre has stepped in with administration and media support for not only the event but for the raft of markets and displays happening around town this festival weekend.
