Those with knowledge of the best kept secret in Western Australia understand why the sailors made the mad dash back from the Minnow Nationals at Sorrento, Victoria across the Nullabor to Busselton. The annual Australia Day Regatta at Geographe Bay Yacht Club has been going for years and most certainly shouldn’t be missed. Ssssh keep that to yourselves, but do put it in your diary for next year.
Fortunately Halesy (Peter Hales of DBYC fame), charged with the dinghy transport arrangements, made it across the Nullarbor in the nic of time!
The memorable family sailing weekend, camping on the shoreline in the grounds of Geographe Bay Yacht Club was again popular. Joining the strong GBYC fleet were The Cruising Yacht Club of Rockingham and the Dunsborough Bay Yacht Club who had a strong Minnow contingent with Dean Cowan taking first place followed closely by TCYC sailors Luke Phillips in second and Jeremy Kaputin in third place. Even beginner Minnow sailors had a go at racing inshore where a few milestones were made.
The Tasar State Titles were held in conjunction with the regatta where fleets represented were Minnows, Optimists, Open Bic’s, Pelicans, Flying Ants, Lasers, 29ers, keel boats and open catamarans.
