VX One Midwinter Championship being sailed in Florida, got underway on Wednesday with David Reich taking the early lead after a dominating performance on the opening three races.
Reich won two races to begin the regatta, then scored a second in the day’s third race for just four points overall. Brian Bennett, builder of the class, follows in second with seven points, and Donnie Brennan rounds out the top three with nine points. Hosted by the Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa, Florida, the Championship is the first stand-alone Midwinters for the young VX One Class.
Winds began at 10-12 knots when Reich won the first race, trailed by Brennan and John Potter. Following Reich in Race 2 two were Bennett and Brennan.
The breeze increased to 15-18 knots by day’s end, when Bennett took Thursday’s final race. Reich and Potter were close behind. Temperatures held around 60 degrees under sunny skies.
