Australian Open Champion leads Auckland Optimists

Fresh sea breezes blessed the 140 boat fleet contesting the two Auckland Optimist Championships being sailed off Wakatere Boating Club, on Auckland's North Shore.

At the end of the second day of racing, the Australian Open Optimist Champion, Nick Egnot-Johnson (Murray's Bay) won two races moving through to the overall lead, by a nine point margin over Hamish Clark (Queen Charlotte YC), with Xanthe Copeland (Wakatere) in third and first female sailor. One point behind is the current Tanner Cup (P-class) champion Leonard Takahashi-Fry in fourth place.

One of the most experienced Optimits sialors in the fleet, Takahashi-Fry led the regatta after the first day but a string of double digit placings on the second day has probably dropped him out of championship contention.

Second and third overall after the first day Scott McKenzie (Kohimarama) and Jackson Keon (Murray's Bay) also dropped back to ninth and sixth respectively.

Racing continues tomorrow as part of the Auckland Anniversary Regatta
