Tow Truck surfs up in Sydney to Southport race

by Rob Kothe on 27 Jul 2003
Its Tow Truck again, the Novocastrian Mumm 30 that surfed to victory in the Sydney to Mooloolaba race, is running 2nd behind Grundig in the Sydney to Gold Coast after another giant night of surfing.

‘The boys had another wet wild ride, but we are half way already’ shouted Anthony Paterson this morning. ‘Our problem is coming now as the wind drops away, then when we come off the plane we are just a 30 footer again’.

Race leader Grundig is 56 miles south south west of Ballina and has an ETA of 14:14 this afternoon. If she can maintain the pace she will set a new race record. Grundig leads IRC A Division from Espresso Forte and Andrew Short Marine djuice.

Ludde Ingvall’s Tokolosh-Luna Park is 2nd on the water, 13 miles behind Grundig.

At the morning sked, the second boat overall in IRC, Tow Truck, was two miles south of Point Korongoro, only a mile behind the Mumm 36 Corum, and 4 miles ahead of the second Mumm 30 Enigma. These three boats are leading the IRC Division C group.

In IRC Division B, the Cookson 12,About Time is seven miles behind Tow Truck which leads from Big Kahuna, with Easy Tiger, the leading Sydney 38, in third place.

Third on the water at the sked, 45 miles north north east of Smokey Cape, was Andrew Short’s Volvo 60, the round the world racer, Djuice, now called Andrew Short Marine, leads the IMS A division from the evergreen Ragamuffin with Fitness First Sting in 3rd place.

In IMS B Andrew Cochrane’s Pendragon, four miles west of Tacking Point, leads Dennis Cooper's Sydney 36 Amante, with Nips-N-Tux 3rd.
