WMRT Monsoon Cup - Trophy reaches final destination

The Alpari World Match Racing Tour Trophy, after seven adrenalin-draining legs, has already reached its final destination in Pulau Duyong, Kuala Terengganu. The prestigious hardware of pure silver will be handed to the winner of the 2012 ISAF Match Racing World Champion right after the 2012 Monsoon Cup on 8th December 2012.

The Alpari World Match Racing Tour trophy arrived at the Ri-Yaz Heritage Marina Resort and Spa on 2nd December 2012, accompanied by James Pleasance, Executive Director of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour to an energetic performance by Team Pirates, prize winning cheerleading team from SMK Cochrane, Kuala Lumpur.

The trophy was awarded for the first time at the AMWRT season finale, the Monsoon Cup in Malaysia on 27 November 2011, to the 2011 ISAF Match Racing World Champion, won by Britain’s Ian Williams and his Team GAC Pindar. Since then, the trophy has travelled the world following the Tour from the season opener in Germany to Korea, Sweden, Chicago, Switzerland, France, Bermuda and finally to Pulau Duyong, Kuala Terengganu where it will be awarded to the new 2012 ISAF Match Racing World Champion on 8th December 2012.

Made from sterling silver with partial gilt and enamel, it adopts a nautical theme complete with spiralling waves, nautical rope detail and the Tour’s famous double sails symbol which sits at the top of the trophy. The trophy perfectly reflects the combative, heated nature of match racing where teams go one-on-one in a winner-takes-all battle on the water.

The trophy was unveiled at Garrard’s flagship store in Mayfair, London on 7th November 2011 in an evening of glitz and glamour. Joined by a host of special guests, Eric Deardorff - CEO of Garrard and Dato’ Peter Gilmour - President of the World Match Racing Tour unveiled the unique silver, nautical inspired trophy, which was both designed and created by Garrard. Guests included Olympians Colin Jackson CBE and Mark Foster, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, British designer Ozwald Boateng OBE, and Strictly Come Dancing stars Brendan Cole and Darren Gough.
