McMillan Cup - Day 1 in Annapolis

by Jahn Tihansky on 22 Oct 2012
SW
PRO Ken Jacobs got race 1 of the McMillan Cup started on time in a light northerly. Kings Point jumped off to a solid start winning race 1 wire to wire with NY Maritime close behind in second and Mass Maritime in third. The final five boats finished in a tight pack a few lengths back.

The northerly died as the ebb kicked in hard and competitors were forced to stand by under AP until an unexpected easterly filled in.

PRO Jacobs reconfigured the course and race 2 got underway with the strong ebb now pushing from pin towards the boat and across the course. Navy and NY Maritime broke away at the boat end and stretched out to a decent lead. But the wind became unstable and at times shut off completely.

Navy held their lead until halfway down the last leg when NY managed to sneak through their lee as the fleet alternated tacks and sail selection between spin and jib. NY held on for the bullet while Navy settled for second. KP came back strong from a poor start to nail a third.

That was all the wind and daylight the day could provide for today. Racing will continue tomorrow.

Results:

1. NY Maritime 2,1 3
2. KP 1,3 4
3. Navy 6,2 8
4. Maine Maritime 5,4 9
5. Mass Maritime 3,7 10
6. Coast Guard 4,6 10
7. Army 7,5 12
8. St. Mary's 8,8 16

Grabbing chances with both hands
Can bad weather actually lead to more sailing? There's been no getting away from the fact that it's been a pretty miserable start to 2024 weather-wise in the UK. February saw record rainfall (yes, I know we're famed for our rain over here), it's been seriously windy and generally chilly.
