At the 2012 Sunfish World Championship, racing out of St. Petersburg Yacht Club, Mendelblatt leads on nine points the 74-boat fleet after three consistent results from the opening races. A fifth in Race 1 was followed up by two second places as he took an early eight point lead.

Following behind is Peru's Alexander Zimmerman who won the third race but a 12th in the opening race of the series sees him trailing the American.

Colombian Olympic Laser sailor Andrey Quintero took the bullet in the second race but like Zimmerman failed to find the consistency of the leader and sits fifth overall and Race 1 victor Andres Eduardo Herkrath (COL) is down in ninth.

Ahead of the Open Worlds, the Youth Worlds took place with a three way tie for first place. The title went to Addison Hackstaff (USA) who had a better series than Nic Baird (USA) who settled for second and Liam McCarthy (USA) who came third.
