Nord Steam Race - First stopover set for Helsinki

by Henry Robson on 10 Oct 2012
The Swan 60 fleet will arrive into Helsinki after their race leg from Saint Petersburg, Russia 2012 Nord Stream Race http://www.nord-stream-race.com/
The opening leg of the inaugural Nord Stream Race, organised by the Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg, will see the Swan 60 fleet reach the vibrant City of Helsinki, Finland on the 19th October. The city stopover will certainly offer a welcome respite for the five competing teams as the 750 nautical mile race gets underway.

The Swan 60 fleet will arrive into Helsinki after their race leg from Saint Petersburg, Russia. The fleet will then take part in a Match Race Regatta on Saturday 20th which will give the five teams a chance to showcase their sailing skills in a different style of race. The full day of regatta racing will conclude with a prize giving, where the Nord Stream Race Inshore Trophy will be presented by Buss group and the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein to the first placed team for the Match Racing Regatta.

Sunday 21st October will offer the public a chance to visit the Swan 60s in the marina, before the Nord Stream Race fleet leave the dock on Monday and begin the second leg of the race, which will take the teams from Helsinki to Gotland, Sweden.

For the spectators and sailors alike there will be plenty to do during the stopover in Helsinki; with a lively cultural scene, Helsinki has something for everyone. From museums, national theatre and nightclubs to parks, forests and waterside hangouts the city will provide an exciting stop on the Nord Stream Race route. The Seurasaari open air museum offer interesting places to explore whilst in the city and after a full day of sight-seeing or racing; visitors can indulge in the fantastic spread of restaurants serving the finest local cuisine.

Helsinki is often fondly called the Daughter of the Baltic and this pet name aptly describes the way the sea is present in the city. The sea is part of the city's soul and there is a close interaction between the sea and the city's residents, businesses and visitors alike. More recently Helsinki has hosted numerous high class yachting events and this continues in 2012 as it proudly hosts the inaugural Nord Stream Race.
