The 2012 Soling Worlds are taking place from 17th-23rd September at Milwaukee Yacht Club. The 30 Solings from nine nations and four continents had to face a windy postponement on the first day at the Worlds but the second day despite the wind, decreased a bit - oscillating in between 14 knots and 20 and some gusts 20+ shifting into a westerly and unstable condition due to the Milwaukee buildings. There was a nice upwind view from the famous 'wing' monument at the memorial park.
The first race USA 853 surprised the fleet by rounding the first mark ahead of USA 846 and CAN 1 with some boat lengths of spare, but CAN 1 and his Olympian experience with a superb spinnaker drive by Joanne Abbott just got the boat flying , the whole distance USA 853 had was lost just before the leeward mark, CAN 1 rounding first (inside overlap) and USA 853, the surprise was finished, with a few things breaking at the boat, USA was left behind by many other boats while CAN 1 built their lead taking the first bullet home through the shifts CAN 225 the reigning champion also did a great job finishing second and NED 33 ended at the third place.
The second race already had many boats going into docks for fixing, a bended mast, tiller that broke, etc, etc… At sometimes it was blowing really hard in one side of the course and people were leaving hiking position in the other side, really difficult to play with. CAN 225 rounded first the windward mark, and kept building their lead, CAN 230 did their homework and placed a second and CAN 1 took the third place, a complete Canadian domain of the race.
The third race had more ups and downs with the wind intensity, and it paid big on the starting vessel and right of the course at the first beat, another great performance from the reigning champion CAN 225 with Peter Hall, Paul Davis and William Hall to finish the race in first followed by CAN 1 with William Abbott, Joanne Abbott and Tom Freeman, in third came CAN 230 with Hans Fogh, John Finch and Gord Devries, once more showing the level of the Canadian fleet.
Tomorrow more strong winds are expected, the same for Saturday….and probably Sunday?
But tonight sailors have their Oktober fest party, with traditional Bavarian music lots of beer and food.
