2014 Youth Olympic Games - Sailing qualification system published

by ISAF on 21 Sep 2012
SW
ISAF has published the qualification system for the sailing competition at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. The second Youth Olympic Games (YOG) will take place in Nanjing, China from 16-24 August 2014 and will feature 100 young sailors from around the globe.

The sailing events at Nanjing 2014 are open to sailors aged 15-16 years old who must have been born between 1 January 1998 and 31 December 1999. NOCs may qualify in each of the four sailing events; in addition, the host nation will automatically qualify in each of the events. To ensure Universality at the YOG there is continental quota system in place and in addition to this eight of the 100 places are reserved as NOC Universality Places to be assigned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

For each of the four sailing events, there are seven Youth Olympic Qualification Events (YOQE). Competitors qualify their National Olympic Committee (NOC) at a YOQE, and the NOC will then select its competitor for that event by the 8th July 2014 deadline.

The seven YOQE for each event are made up of six Continental Qualification Events and a final World Championship or world qualification event. At the Continental Qualification Events only nations within that continent will be eligible for YOG Qualification. The final qualification events will be confirmed in due course.

ISAF Head of Competitions Alastair Fox said, 'Following the huge success of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games ISAF is now looking forward to Nanjing 2014. The Qualification System has been created to ensure Universality at the Youth Olympic Games and ISAF will work closely with both the Byte CII Class and the Techno 293 Class to ensure the success of the continental qualification events.'

Full details of the qualification system including the continental quotas in English and French are available in the full qualification system document here.
