Tornado World Championships - Day 1 on Lake Garda

by Andrew Dowley on 18 Sep 2012
2012 Tornado World Championships Martina Barnetova
A fleet of 41 Tornado's from 11 different nations across the World have arrived in the beautiful scenic location of Torbole on Lake Garda, Italy for the annual Mixed and Open Tornado World Championships. The competition will take place from the 17th - 21st September.

Over the past few days the teams have been out on the water practicing and perfecting their boat setup. Pablo Soldano from Ullman Sails was on hand Wednesday and Thursday for those who wanted some training and help with set up of their Tornado One Design Sails.

Sunday saw the opening ceremony followed by one practice race for the fleet before the kick off of the World Championships on Monday. The conditions were perfect for the race with 15 knots of breeze across the race course. It was Team Windrush, Brett Burvill and Ryan Duffield from Australia who came out on top. After coming third in the Worlds last year they're hoping they can hold onto their good form for the rest of the week. Competition is tough this year with many top sailors, familiar faces old and new.

Monday morning came and it was time for the Championships to kick off, two races were scheduled with a 1pm CET start time. A lovely 12 knots of wind for the sailors to contend against on their first official day.

Race one was won by last year’s champions, the Greek team of Iordanis Paschalidis and Kostas Trigonis who were followed by the new Tornado team of Matteo Ferraglia and Lorenzo Bianchini who are using the Tornado Class charter boat for the week. In third place were yesterday’s winners Brett Burvill and Ryan Duffield.

Race two saw some change from the first races results but not in the winner, again it was the Greeks who took the victory. They were followed by David Krizek and Adam Zdenek from the Czech Republic then Matteo Ferraglia and Lorenzo Bianchini were third. The German team of Hayung Schodde and Bjorn Helmerichs were unfortunately OCS so they've already used one of their discards.

Tomorrow another two races are scheduled.
