Olympic gold medallist Tom Slingsby now holds the keys to Gosford City following a huge waterfront welcome on Saturday morning on the grassy lawns outside Gosford Sailing Club.
Hundreds of locals cheered as Gosford Mayor Laurie Maher congratulated the five time Laser World Championship on his Olympic Gold Medal performance in Weymouth during London 2012.
`Tom's contribution to Olympic sport is a great one for him individually but it has also put Gosford on the international map,' Councillor Maher said.
`He and Leisl Tesch, who won gold at the Paralympics just this week, have officially made the Central Coast the sailing capital of Australia.
`We are tremendously proud of their achievements.'
Slingsby, now 27, a Point Frederick local has been sailing with the Gosford Sailing Club since he was seven years old.
He flew out today for San Francisco to join the Oracle team defending the America’s Cup.
Slingsby said during the presentation that he will not decide on a future Olympic campaign before September 2012 but it will not surprise if he begins sailing the heavy weight single man Finn dinghy in any spare time he has as part of James Spithill led Oracle team.
