Book Review- 'Outfitting the Offshore Cruising Sailboat'

by Rob Tickner on 9 Sep 2012
Preparing for Offshore cruising in a used sailing boat - follow the steps SW
When starting from scratch to buy and outfit a boat, you just can't get too much advice, and here's some more, concentrating on preparing a boat for offshore cruising by going for a second hand boat.

Several books have been offered on buying used sailing boats for the purpose of long distance voyaging including John Vigor’s 20 Small Sailboats and Gregg Nestor’s Twenty Affordable Sailboats. The used boats reviewed in these books are all available to those on a modest budget, and there are plenty other used fiberglass production boats out there which are solid candidates for the would-be cruiser.

In Outfitting the Offshore Sailboat, Peter Berman reviews the criteria for selecting a used fiberglass hull sailboat, but picks up where Vigor and Nestor leave off.

Berman shares his 40+ years’ experience of overhauling and refitting a myriad of different sailboats in preparation for offshore voyaging.

Follow the information offered in Outfitting the Offshore Sailboat and you can buy and refit a cruising sailboat for a fraction of the cost of buying a new boat.

The author's basic premise is that new offshore sailboats are expensive, and the market in used cruising sailboats is vast.

There is something for everyone here.

About Peter Berman:
Peter I. Berman has cruised more than 100,000 miles in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Caribbean Oceans over the past 45 years in nearly a dozen different designs ranging from traditional CCA designs to modern high-performance craft. He’s owned and extensively refit a wide variety of craft: medium to large wooden and fiberglass ketches, centerboard ketches, sloops, cutters, aft cockpit, and center cockpit designs.

You can buy this book by visiting either of Boat Books stores in Melbourne or Sydney or if that's too far you can purchase it from them online by http://www.boatbooks-aust.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=98&products_id=30790!clicking_here.
