F2 World Powerboat Championships head to UK waters

by Nicola Drummond on 5 Sep 2012 F2 World Powerboat Championships 2012 are being held on the weekend of 15 and 16 September on UK waters, once again, after an absence of over a decade.

The National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham will play host to this entertaining, thrilling and exciting event, which will see some 24 drivers from across the globe battling it out on the water and potentially reaching speeds in excess of 200km/hr.

'It’s great news that after more than a decade a round of the F2 World Championship will be held in Britain. We have a very strong and every increasing fleet in the RYA British Championship and four of the recent World Championship titles being secured by British racers', commented John Puddifoot, RYA Powerboat Racing Manager.

Alongside the international contingent expected to attend, Britain will be fielding a strong fleet of home grown competitors including, Owen Jelf (46, Poole). The former F4 World Champion who finished third in the F2 World Championship in 2008 will be hoping for a good result on home waters to boost his current championship standings.

Alongside Owen will be newcomers to the F2 World Championship, Nottingham based JPL Racing Team’s Malcolm Goodman (30, St Helen’s) and Ian Andrews (45, Atherstone), a former two times F3 World Champion also competing under the British Flag at Nottingham.

Goodman recently secured the 2012 British F2 Sprint Championship title and a silver medal at the recent F2 European Championships in Auronzo, Italy, with Andrew finishing a very credible ninth at the European Championships.

So all eyes will be on the Brits to see what they can do on their home course!

F2 Powerboat Racing this action packed and fast becoming one of the most senior, professional forms of motorsport racing.

One of the reasons for this classes’ success is the fact that it is a ‘stock engine class’, and any tuning or modification to the original engine is strictly forbidden. This keeps the financial running costs to a minimum for teams and ensures that success will come to the most talented and knowledgeable drivers.

RYA Powerboat Racing Officer and one of the Nottingham event coordinators Nikki Drummond explained that the whole sport can’t wait for the event. 'Taking Powerboat Racing back to Nottingham at this level will really showcase our sport and achievements to a global audience.
