For auction- Kookaburra River Queens to go under the hammer

by Rivergate International Boat Show on 21 Aug 2012

The Kookaburra River Queens, two authentic paddle wheelers and long-standing Brisbane icons, will be auctioned at Rivergate International Boat Show on Sunday October 7.

Brisbane Cruises Captain Jim Kelly owns and operates the boats, and said the decision to sell was a tough one.
'The Queens have operated on the Brisbane River since 1987, and I’ve been lucky enough to be involved with them for the past five years,' Captain Kelly said.

'The boats have been more than well maintained. They have been improved immeasurably to the point where some maintenance items won’t need to be touched for another 30 years.

'They are part of Brisbane folklore, and I hope they’ll remain here for many years to come,' he said. Marine Auctions principal Adrian Seiffert will conduct the auction.

'This will be a memorable day in the life of these two wonderful vessels. However, the question remains, ‘Will it be a sad or happy day?’' Mr Seiffert said.

'I have to wonder if these magnificent paddle wheelers stay in Australian hands, or whether yet another of our icons be snapped up by offshore owners.

'Any astute purchaser can see the potential in these boats,' he said.

The Kookaburra River Queens conjure up many happy memories for thousands of Brisbane families as well as international tourists. Many couples have held their wedding receptions on board.

Rivergate International Boat Show is set to be held at Rivergate Marina and Shipyard in Murrarie from October 5 to 7. The River Queens will be showcased at the event, providing cruising opportunities so attendees can enjoy the magnificent vessels.
