Farr 30 World Championship - Demourkas dominates

In 2011, Deneen Demourkas became the first female skipper to win an international offshore one-design world championship.
If she and her team can continue their dominating ways over the 2012 BMW Farr 30 World Championship fleet on Sunday, she’ll make history once again – and on the California skipper’s birthday.
Despite a near-perfect 2,1,1 scoreline during tricky conditions Saturday, Demourkas was cautious about her lead.
'I’ve been in this class far too long to get complacent at the end of a Farr 30 regatta, even with a nice lead and especially on my birthday,' she said. 'No lead is safe in a place as tricky as Laholm Bay, and as we’ve seen multiple times already, 13 points can evaporate in the blink of an eye.'
The battle for the rest of the podium positions remains tight, though, with Malmo, Sweden’s Martin Strandberg holding on to second by just six points over New York’s James Richardson.
Meanwhile, Stockholm’s Richard Goransson (SWE 6100 The End) turned in a strong performance Saturday to move into fifth, striking position for the final podium place despite being disqualified from race 3 of the series.
'It’s frustrating to know that we’d likely be just a point or two behind Barking Mad right now were it not for a tough break on the first day,' said Goransson.
'Yet our focus Sunday will be on making sure we have a great time on the water, and the chips will fall where they may.'
