Sailing is not a rich man's sport

I have a friend who went to the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens last weekend. He despaired of finding a ticket in Hong Kong, so bought a package from a London travel agent that included an air ticket, a hotel room and – of course – a Rugby Sevens ticket. The air ticket was a throw-away, he moved into a hotel for three nights (his wife was delighted), and he doesn't remember much of the weekend for which he paid almost US$2,500 and at which he was merely a spectator. Cost of three days of fried chicken, stadium beer and Wanchai pub rounds was extra.

On the other hand, I can get an air ticket to Koh Samui for just over US$380, spend another US$450 on accommodation for the week, and pay US$155 to participate as a crewmember in the Koh Samui Regatta with a week's worth of parties thrown in. That's under US$1,000.

Who says sailing is a rich man's sport?
