Awards and awards, cruising sailor murder, out-of-control lighthouse..

European Yacht of the Year Saphire 27  .. .

Watching who wins awards is often somewhere to start in deciding what to buy for your own yacht. This week the European Yachts of the Year were announced, with Beneteau, Dehler, Saphire and Contest taking out the big prizes, and we are featuring this week two of the winners of the Pittman Innovation Awards – great products both, the multifunction GPS tracker InReach SE, and SailSteer and SailTime from B&G.

InReach SE - has done well since its introduction in July 2013  .. .

Sailors for the Sea, David Rockefeller's ocean protection organisation, is looking for the help of all sailors in the Caribbean, if you see and photograph a whale-tail.

Zune and negligent lighthouse  .. .

In other news, we tell of French sailor Thomas Coville's good start in his attempt to best the world solo circumnavigation record; the EU Naval Force in the Gulf of Aden is reporting their first attack of 2014; and you'll just love the Kitsap story of the lighthouse that hit Paul Allen's megayacht and damaged it badly.

Read on, enjoy, and, if you are lucky enough to be on the water...

...sweet sailing!

Latest Caribbean murder of cruising sailor is tip of an iceberg
Nancy Knudsen,
It's time cruising rallies and Caribbean publicists stopped being so quiet about the violent crime in the Caribbean. The latest murder of an innocent British cruising sailor is only the last in a long line of murders in parts of the Caribbean. When 4 sailors were killed in the Indian Ocean a couple of years ago by Somalis it was mainstream world news, but many murders occur in the Caribbean... [more]

Over 50 whales rescued from New Zealand beach
Sail-World Cruising round-up,
It's a sight nobody wants to see, especially sailors who often have a chance at an inspiring (not too close) encounter. Over 50 whales were discovered on the shore at New Zealand's Farewell Spit, a fairly remote beach on the South Island. Sadly it was the fifth time the whales tried to beach themselves, 22 of whom previously did not survive.... [more]

Rescue after rudder loss, yacht abandoned, but was it necessary?
Des Ryan,
One critical question many long-range cruising sailors spend time thinking about is what to do in the case of a lost rudder. There are many jury rig suggestions, most of which don't work, but sailors have been known to sail thousands of miles steering with their sails, which throws into contrast the following story, not to mention their abandonment, rather than scuttling, of their disabled yacht.....
