HAPPY NEW YEAR, and other news . . .

If you are reading this, I urge you to switch off your device and put the champagne or beer on ice, pack a hamper and get onboard or by the water and savour the celebrations.

It's NYE 2013 for Heaven's sake, and work can wait at least til after midday tomorrow . . . once the Berocca or Nurofen, depending on your poison, take effect.

Despite the doldrums in most business quarters, we have managed to compile some interesting, varied stories for this week's edition in brief: including plenty about fishing, its estimated value to NSW, as well as the federal government's commitment to invest in Australian fisheries to keep them competitive and high-tech in to the future.

Abbot Point Nth Qld  .. ©

That's not all the Abbott govt is up to - there's plans for dredging to support the development of the eerily-named Abbot Point coal terminal, 25 kilometres north of Bowen, at the northern end of the Galilee and Bowen coal basins - adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef and causing concern to green groups, tourism operators and community organisations. Watch this space for more from FNQ.

In boat show news, New Year's Day is the start of the 109th Progressive Insurance New York Boat Show. What an achievement and also, the first of the 2014 shows to launch innovations in motorboats and accessories.

In yet more positive news from the US, powerboat sales are up 5% in 2013, something the NMMA says indicates the GFC is behind them/us and we can look forward to better results ahead in 2014.

We also have details of the free guide to Sydney Harbour on-water and foreshore events over the summer, available free for boaties in either published or online format courtesy of Roads and Maritime Services.

It may be MarineBusiness-World LITE this week, but there are many more news stories in the pipeline, including a follow up to the Rolex Sydney Hobart and what sponsors expect to gain from their massive investments, Australian and NZ boat show news, and much more, so look forward to those once you're back on deck.

Wherever you are celebrating the end of 2013, rolling in to 2014, take care, be safe and let's do it all again starting tomorrow . . . or the day after!

Happy New Year!

Jeni Bone, editor
