Sydney Hobart and Clipper news from Canada!

The Clipper Round the World fleet has just recently completed Leg 5 of the race from Albany to Sydney; the reason for the short leg was to position the fleet for the start of Race 6 where they will actually take part of the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Quite an adventure for Clipper crewmembers that will be racing in a big fleet for a change, against some of the best in the world. Canadian skipper Eric Holden, Sail Canada November Sailor of the Month, will surely rely on his strong weather routing skills to helm Henry Lloyd and her crew safely to Tasmania and maintain their lead on the Clipper Round the World scoreboard.

While on the topic of Canadian offshore racing, Sail Canada has recently announced their intent to participate in the 2014 Brewin Dolphin Commodore's Cup, the popular RORC event in Cowes, Isle of Wight; it's been almost 30 years since Canada has sent a team to the UK, our last participation goes back the 1985 Admiral's Cup. Chef de mission Capt. Mike Evans from Halifax is making good progress recruiting three Canadian yachts and teams interested in the overseas challenge. Stay tuned for more details.

Those looking for a reprieve from Mother Nature should consider their options for racing in the Caribbean in the coming months; events begin as early as January in Barbados, followed by the popular RORC Caribbean 600 in February and charter friendly races in St. Maarten, St. Thomas and BVI in March, wrapping up in Antigua in April. Check out our stories introducing the various events in future weeks.

Latest news from the Bay of Biscay have Bernard Stamm abandoning the Open 60 Cheminées Poujoulat some 200 miles from Brest, after getting caught in a storm on a delivery back from the Transat Jacques Vabre. Everyone on board is OK.

Wishing you and your families a safe and merry Christmas!

All the best, Guy
