Harold Wilson famously said “A week is a long time in politics.” There are probably more than a few New Zealanders who think that six days is a painfully short time when it comes to sailing, and in particular the apparent collapse of the almighty Emirates Team New Zealand America's Cup team. After vaulting into a seemingly unassailable lead in the AC34 series, and sitting on match point ever since, Dean Barker and his crew have conceded five straight races to the Oracle opposition. The Spithill/Slingsby/Ainslie trio in the back of the ‘American' boat now need only two wins to draw level with ETNZ.
This morning, having once again rolled out of bed at 0400h local time, and with ETNZ slated for the favoured port entry for both of today's scheduled races, we were expecting to see New Zealand win the America's Cup. Wrong. And then the Great God TV spoke, and the next race was canned for no good reason apart from the fact that the timing was inconvenient.
A week ago, ETNZ seemingly could do no wrong. Now it is Oracle's turn in the driving seat. Will they swap again? Set the alarm clock...
