Abbott to suspend marine parks, Berth auction, Brisbane Boat Show

What a plethora of stories for all tastes this week! From the boat show circuit, in Australia, as well as Cannes and Monaco, to some great initiatives locally: among them 'I Boat, I Fish & I Vote', which received plenty of attention yesterday on the Gold Coast as a backdrop to Tony Abbott committing to suspending Marine Park roll out in favour of objective scientific research, and the rebranded 'Disover Sailing Day' scheduled for Sunday 27 October with an expanded brief this year.

So first, the news all anglers - that's one in five Australians, folks - have been waiting for. The Coalition promises to suspend and review Labor's marine park legislation. 'We do not want to lock up our oceans,' said the man who would be PM, adding that the last thing the Coalition would do is declare a marine protected area without proper consultation.

'We won't make decisions that damage the lives and livelihoods of people without talking to people first,' he said, reminiscing about his own childhood spent happily fishing with his grandpa on the Gold Coast. Way to win, hook, line and sinker, the votes of the boating and fishing crowd at the Gold Coast Convention Centre for the Australian Fishing Trade Association's 2013 Fishing Tackle, Marine and Outdoor Trade Show!

I Fish I Boat I Vote  BIAA Nik Parker

We have all the details of the BIAA initiative, which has just done the rounds in NSW as part of the ToobigToIgnore roadshow, pointing out the importance of the two million small businesses in Australia, and the value of the boating industry as part of the small business community. Get onboard now by visiting and make sure you LIKE on Facebook/IfishIboatIvote

RNA Showgrounds  Marine Queensland

Don't forget the Brisbane Boat Show, back at the RNA Showgrounds, right around the time we will all head to the polls, 6-9 September. Plenty to see, celebrate and win! Imagine making this dandy Razar Cat yours in time for summer! Make mine pink!

Marine Auctions is poised to conduct its latest online auction - this time highly sought-after marina berths in some of Australia's premium coastal locations - from Airlie and Mackay to Southport and Scarborough and many, many in between.

This is your chance to own (leasehold) a piece of vibrant and valuable marine community - the social hub of many towns and in demand as Baby Boomers retire and look for their lifestyle and leisure options on the water.

Also exclusive to us this week, a preview of the America's Cup action and the value of NZ's involvement in this world famous regatta to its economy and marine businesses - a staggering $350m to date, and that's before the Kiwis hold the 'Auld Mug' aloft (we hope) following the September Showdown series against the US.

There's plenty more to skim through or read in depth, all aimed at improving your business, inspiring you and advancing the marine industry.

Keep sending your own news and views.
