Heading North with the Whales for the Boat Watching Season

Writing this editorial at Brisbane airport, heading north for Airlie Beach Race Week, thence Audi Hamilton Island Race Week and SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week.

Two especially big classes at Airlie Beach this week, there are 30 boats in the Multi-Hull Nationals and 41 in the Cruising Classes. All in all 113 boats so far, but we will not be surprised if that number goes into the 120´s by Saturday morning event start. Sail-World will be on Pioneer Bay all week and then it's off to Hamilton Island Race Week, an event we´ve not missed for 18 years.

The FNQ action continues with Sail Townsville from August 23rd with a twelve day event is a culmination of SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week and a Yachting Queensland Multi-Class Regatta.

Entries are still open for Yachting Queensland's regatta that is open to all ‘off the beach' classes and includes the Queensland F18 State Championship, Queensland Taser State Championship, Kite Townsville Championship, Sail Townsville Open Dinghy Regatta and the North Queensland Youth Championships.

Luna Rossa and Artemis Racing - Louis Vuitton Cup, Semi-Final 2, August 8, 2013  Chuck Lantz ©

Former Moth World Champion Nathan Outteridge knows better than most that when it comes down to foiling, races are won and lost on the turns. The Artemis Team just have not had enough time on the water and so Luna Rossa is set to take the Louis Vuitton semi final unless a miracle happens.

Reporting from San Francisco for Sail-World, the ever cynical Bob Fisher, points out in some detail, just how the America´s Cup Defender has established a telemetry advantage over their rivals, in the name of safety.

But now to the Boarding Gate, as we head for Proserpine.
