Sun & Sales for Sydney, AIMEX-Taiwan MOU, I fish-I boat-I vote!

What a sterling effort by organisers, exhibitors, sponsors, partners and suppliers for the 46th Sydney International Boat Show. AWESOME show, enhanced by the incredible blue skies and universal optimism all round.

Sydney Boat Show  BIA NSW

Speaking with exhibitors in the Halls and on the marina, the numbers were down somewhat (7.8% in total), but massive on occasion, all well informed, knowing their products, comparing the deals and best of all, according to BIA NSW data, 4 out of 10 people looking to buy at the show.

'40% of people who come through the gates have purchase intention,' says Domenic Genue, the SIBS dynamo who must have swallowed litres of Berocca to get through every facet of a very feature-packed show. 'In all honesty, it's quality over quantity. Our target was genuine, qualified visitors who came to the show for the whole experience - to see the boats and marine products, to be entertained, educated and enjoy what really is a celebration of the boating lifestyle.'

Sydney 2013  BIA NSW

The five-day event was deemed a success on all other indicators. The leads were copious and many exhibitors reported people from previous shows, including Sanctuary Cove, Melbourne and Sydney last year, back for another look. New Zealanders too were back in numbers, after an obvious break for three or so years. And with the dollar dropping, many of the European boats will only get more pricey, so dealers are hoping this will spur potential buyers to take the leap and seal the deal.

'Buyers are not as impulsive as they once were,' continues Genua. 'Boats are a considered purchase. People are doing their homework, balancing up all their options and when all the stars align, jumping in. We worked very hard to create the environment for all the factors to add up.'

Many hope consumer sentiment will have begun to turn, now the date for the federal election has been set (September 7) and once the election is over and done with, boating will be back on the agenda.

I Fish I Boat I Vote  BIAA Nik Parker

During the boat show, the BIAA launched the much-anticipated I FISH, I BOAT & I VOTE campaign, setting out a policy platform which will provide a secure future for all sectors. Timing couldn't have been better, with the Rudd government announcing the date for the federal election - 7 September - giving us all plenty of time to get behind this initiative.

Taiwan MOU  AIMEX ©
In other news - and there's heaps and more being added each day this week - AIMEX and Superyacht Australia have signed an MOU with the organisers of the inaugural Taiwan International Boat Show, slated for May next year in Kaohsiung, which will see a merger of expertise and opportunities.

The hub of yacht building in Asia, one of the largest exporters in the world and so close to China, this region offers a new world of business opportunities for Australian and New Zealand companies.

Organisers state: 'Through Taiwan's geographical advantage, foreign manufacturers are able to enter the Asian market, in turn attracting manufacturers from Australia, America, Japan, Hong Kong and China to the exhibition.' Find out more at or enquire through AIMEX.
