Sail-World New Zealand: August 2, 2013 - Round Robin Reviewed
The Louis Vuitton Cup Round Robins are officially over.
Now is the time for them to be judged.
One aspect aside, the record books will show they were undoubtedly the biggest non-event in the history of the Louis Vuitton Cup.
Just two of the three boats competed. The winner won eight races, of which four were contested. The second placed boat came away with four points - all from uncontested races, and scored two DNF's for finishing later than five minutes after the winning boat.
In previous, recent Louis Vuitton Cups, there would have been seven to 13 entries. While the winner and maybe second placegetter would have been determined three quarters of the way through the series, the final races were usually heart-stoppers in the last races of the Round Robin, as several teams vied for the final two spots.
While lacking numbers the 2013 edition of the Louis Vuitton Cup broke all records for America's Cup boat speeds, and maybe spectacle - depending on whether you prefer AC72's or 12 Metres.
According to shore side organisers, the spectator numbers have exceeded expectations. Certainly the YouTube numbers are very good, all things cosidered - with some races attracting viewership in six figures. And bear in mind there are oft-criticized Youtube blackouts in territories where TV rights holders had exclusive rights to providing race viewing, and didn't, depriving many fans of being able to see the racing live - free to air, or on subscriber TV.
Even harder to understand, is the decision midway through the series that the uncontested races would no longer be put on YouTube. That was despite the viewer numbers being only 10,000 a day shy of the contested races. That also despite at least one of the aforesaid TV rights holders posting all races on their website - but that wasn't deemed to be an option for Youtube viewers.
Why did the uncontested, solo races in the Louis Vuitton Cup hold their audience? Because the commentators/producers were smart enough to adapt the style of the show, and get in some excellent guests who could talk viewers through the nuances of just a single AC72 sailing at 40kts plus. Experts who could explain a foiling gybe and what happened, or should have happened, and along the way educated a new breed of armchair experts.

What happens in the Semi-Finals remains to be seen. And when they are done, they too will also be compared to previous Louis Vuitton Semi's.

Waiting to launch, 420 Worlds. NZ Team 420 Worlds Day 7, Valencia, Spain Rob Burn
In Valencia, several New Zealand crews have been sailing in the 420 World Championships. It was a big fleet of over 100 boats, with plenty of challenges for the young New Zealand crews.

Last weekend, Doyle Sails' Mike Sanderson took out the Elliott 5.9 Traveller Series at Marsden Cover, sailing against a 13 boat fleet. We have a full report and plenty of great images from Gareth Cooke. Also included is a full update on what's new in the Elliott 5.9 class, including a great new building deal.
On Tuesday we posted the first of the America's Cup rent to view video from the Maritime Productions archive. It features a recreation of the first ever America's Cup Race in 1851, which was produced in 1968 by Gerald Schnitzer, a noted Hollywood producer and director.
Over the coming weeks we will be releasing the trailers for additional titles along with galleries of images form the era.
