However this morning the fleet is spreading out and This morning Tony Mitchell's Super Sled is now 480 miles into the 1440 nautical mile race and is now leading on line honours, IRC and PHS scoring systems.
ISAF and ILCA on thin ice? Intellectual Property Rights and Copyright - today we feature an article by British IPR lawyer John Harwood-Bee on the lawsuit between designer Bruce Kirby, builder LPE and associated companies and ISAF and ILCA.
While the whole subject might appear quite arcane, it's having a serious impact in the Asia Pacific, with long time Laser builder Performance Sailcraft Australia scratching its head as to how it might be able to build Lasers, after ISAF-ILCA recent rules changes and stay out of the US court system.
After 40 years of doing the right thing by everyone, PSA is now stuck been a rock and a hard place and it has asked ISAF and ILCA and been told very unhelpfully `Do what you have to do'... We trust Australia´s and in fact all the Pacific representatives will be asking some hard questions at the upcoming ISAF mid-year meeting in Copenhagen this weekend.
America's Cup: Russell Coutts and Grant Dalton, the heads of two America's Cup teams squared off in Auckland last Friday night. Sail-World´s Richard Gladwell has provided a two part feature on the Q & A session.
Robert Date´s Scarlet Runner has confirm its entry in the 2014 Cape Town to Rio race. The 16 meter (52 feet) long Reichel-Pugh designed Racing Yacht has an impressive racing record dating back to its launch in July 2009.
This includes first in IRC Division one at the Audi Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, line honours and a new race record in the ORCV's Cock of the Bay race and wins in the Audi Docklands Invitational and the Adelaide to Port Lincoln race in February 2010, 2011 and 2012, setting a new race record of 12 hours for the 160nm race.
Her success continued with line honours and IRC wins in the Melbourne to King Island race in 2011 and 2013. In fact she has only been unplaced in one ocean race and that was the 2011 Sydney to Hobart race where she was placed eighth on IRC.
Entries now open for Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race 2013 - the 384 nautical mile Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race to start on Sydney Harbour at 1pm, Saturday 27 July.
Entries have started to flow in for the 17th Mooloolaba Etchells Winters Australasian Championship, June 6-9th 2013.
Entries are open with eight teams already registering (some of these have not yet hit the website list) with two Etchells Winter winners already aiming to make history, both the 2012 Etchells World Champion Tom King (2011 Winter Champion) and last year's winter winner Matthew Chew (part of Jason Muir's 2009 World Champion team) being the first of many expected to enter this year.
In 16 years of the Etchells Australasian Winter Championship there have been 16 winners - a prestigious list - Dave Rose (1997), Russell Coutts (1998), Ian Johnston (1999), Julian Plante (2000), Michael Coxon (2001), Mark Bradford (2002), Cameron Appleton (2003), Grant Wharington (2004), Rob Brown (2005), Cameron Miles (2006), Skip Lissiman (2007), Graeme Taylor (2008), Damien King (2009), Alastair Gair (2010),Tom King (2011) and Matthew Chew (2012).
Will the list continue to expand in 2013, with a 17th winner, rather than a previous champion taking a second title?
