As weather starts to cool, the action is heating up

Sail Port Stephens gets under way next Monday with the traditional feeder race from Pittwater to Newcastle and then Newcastle to Port Stephens on Sunday - expected to bring 30 plus boats from down south ahead of Monday morningĀ“s regatta start.

Don Grundy the Commodore of the Corlette Point Sailing Club, the organising authority is predicting another record fleet. He said today 'The entries are flooding in. It definitely looks like we are going to exceed last year's numbers.‘

Elliott 7 Class 2012 Sail Port Stephens Regatta hosted by Corlette Point Sailing Club  Matt King /Sail Port Stephens 2012

The growth is particularly strong in the Performance Racing and Performance Cruising fleets and there is some good growth in other fleets, including the Elliott 7 sportsboats who are returning for their second Australian Championships.

'For the last few years, the availability of Marina Berths has been a major issue. This year, the calendar has helped us. We are in better shape than ever with Marina Berths this year, with Easter and the school holidays being split. A lot of the Game Fishing boats have gone back to Sydney. D'Albora's Nelson Bay is full but there are still berths at The Anchorage and Soldiers Point Marina.

Junior Regatta Racing during 2012 Sail Port Stephens Regatta hosted by Corlette Point Sailing Club  Matt King /Sail Port Stephens 2012

'The Junior Regatta numbers are growing with the O'Pen Bics being joined by Optimists and Flying 11's this year and Salamander once again becoming a colourful sight.

This is going to be a bumper regatta and looking forward to 2015, we are expecting much bigger and better things next year of course, when the Australian IRC are held down in Newcastle and many of the top guns will be racing the NSW titles the week before here at Sail Port Stephens.
