Bernard Stamm's worst week in racing?

Bernard Stamm - 2012 Vendee Globe  TH Martinez/Sea&Co/onEdition

Those fantastic achievements of the past week were overshadowed by news from the back of the fleet though; after pulling in to the Auckland Islands to find shelter to repair his hydrogenerators, Bernard Stamm found himself victim of unfortunate incidents that caused the Vendée Globe International Jury to disqualify him for receiving outside assistance. An incredible outpour of support from racing enthusiasts soon followed to back Stamm's appeal with the jury; unfortunately, after examining new information, the original decision is being upheld. A petition from fellow racers to reinstate the Swiss skipper was submitted as Stamm set off to continue racing. To make matters worse, reports are just coming in from Cheminées Poujoulat as I write this; she was hit by an unidentified floating object that caused significant damage to the remaining hydrogenerator. Stay tuned for more details as they become available; we understand that Stamm had to shut down all power and communication with the yacht is currently unavailable.

Melges 32 big fleet starting line action - Key West 2012 - Melges 32  ©2012 JOY | International Melges 32 Class Association

Back in North America, racers are preparing for the Winter racing season; notable upcoming events include the perennial Quantum Key West on January 20th where we can expect to see everything from the new J/70 to 72-foot Mini Maxi's competing in what is mostly one-design racing. Early February will see the popular Melges 20 back in action in Miami for the first North American race of the 2013 season. We'll follow the Canadian entries in both events.

See you soon at the Toronto International Boat Show starting on Saturday, January 12th.

All the best for 2013!
