The days are cooling down (a little bit) in Hong Kong, and it's time to re-start the official sailing season. Not that there hasn't been plenty of sailing going on over the summer – there has – but the organisers don't go in much for press releases and other useful vehicles of communication. On the other hand, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club fires off its Autumn Regatta over the weekend 8-9 September and are currently believed to be burning up the remaining stock of last season's joss sticks while asking for sunshine, blue skies, and 15 kts of breeze from the east!
If you think that current plays an important role in race tactics, please read Rod Davis's story on getting used to multihull tide tactics vs monohull. A different thing entirely!
If you have ever fancied ‘something completely different,' maybe a trip through the Northwest Passage would fit the bill? Rising global temperatures is making the passage through the ice-bound parts of northern Canada easier in some ways, but it is still not a trip for the faint-hearted. Incomplete charts, infrequent ports of shelter and just being a long way from help if you really need it are all part of the story. Report from s/y Upchuck, below.
