The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is back in the news as the fleet began their Atlantic crossing to Derry-Londonderry yesterday, following a short stopover in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It all started with a competitive start in Halifax harbour and constant sail changes on the way to open water; the fleet has now split around Sable Island as some yachts are considering a more northerly route to Northern Ireland.
Newport, Rhode Island, saw 166 entries cross the line under spinnaker for a postcard perfect start to the biennial Newport to Bermuda race. A popular offshore event that has run for over 100 years, the race will takes yachts of all kinds across the Gulf Stream to Bermuda where not only winds but currents will play a major role in selecting winning strategies.
