The three reports have been released by the International Sailing Federation from the Evaluation Trials for the Olympic Womens Skiff, the Mixed Multihull and on the suitability of Kiteboarding for Olympic Competition.
We have featured the stories from ISAF which contain the links to the reports and data for each event, two of which will be sailed at the 2016 Olympics. The Kiteboard is yet to be formally worked into the the Olympic calendar, and could come in as a new Olympic event (lifting the number from 10 to 12 , but holding overall entry numbers the same), or replacing Windsurfing, with which it is currently bracketed.
The preferences are for either the FX by Mackay Boats, which has been bracketed with the RS900 in the Womens Olympic Skiff. The FX was the clear favourite of the sailors, however for reasons best known to themselves the Evaluation Team have tried to pull the RS900 into the picture, by citing reasons of lighter weight and easier launching.
On the first count, obviously the RS900 is 10kg lighter - it is a shorter boat. As for launching, as the FX team sailing in NZ found, there is a specific routine to be followed with launching - passed on from the Mens 49er crews. On the water performance seems to have been downplayed. Clearly the preference of the womens crews Sail-World has spoken to, is for the Womens Skiff to be a challenging boat to sail - and the FX rates highly in this category.
Plus of course there are the obvious advantages of having a boat, in the 49er hull, that is tried and refined at Olympic level.
Had the other boats taken this approach there would have been the opportunity to really push the boats with Olympic level crews, and compare one to the other, rather than using crews who were coming to grips with new boats.
In the Mixed Multihull the choice is clear cut - with a preference to a new design the Nacra 17, designed by the well established design partnership of Morelli and Melvin. The Nacra 17 was the first choice of 14 of the 18 sailors.
With any new boat, the ISAF will face the usual issues associated with getting a boat into production to Olympic quality standard, and then ensuring the development and enhancements don't creep in as then boat is sailed and refined. Again the multihull the sailors made a clear indication that they wanted a boat that would be challenging to sail, and not one that was aimed at achieving mass participation.
For the Kiteboard, the ISAF report is laudatory about the event, what it has achieved and potentially what it could bring to the Olympic regatta. The only question that now remains is how to fit it in, rather then whether it should be there at all.

Camper has twice been in front of the International Jury, seeking redress over a sail matter on board Telefonica in Leg 4. from the second hearing they got the admission that there had been two omissions from the Race Committee, but no redress was given.
