Volvo Ocean Race, 2016 Evaluations and more sailing news

Equipment Evaluations for the 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition are underway in Santander, Spain. Sail-World has the latest news and videos.

Across the world in New Zealand, the Volvo Ocean Race competitors have left Auckland on Leg 5 of the race, headed for Itajai (Brazil). Facing rough weather and building seas, Telefonica skippered by Iker Martinez (ESP) was the early leader blast reaching at 18 knots, but the latest news is of a protest over the sail inventory and Camper has snatched the lead. On board Puma Ocean Racing two crew members were injured in the brutal conditions, one is much recovered and the other might be a Cape Horn drop off.

2016 Equipment Evaluation day 5 + Video

Government recognises RYA objection to amended red diesel declaration
Government has confirmed today that they have no intentions of making it unlawful for red diesel bought in the UK to be used outside UK territorial waters. The RYA had objected in the strongest terms to Government's original amendments published on 20 February 2012 and made it clear that restricting the use of marked ‘red' diesel to UK waters would not be acceptable.... Finn Junior and Senior European Championship - Race 3

Three days into the 2012 Finn European Championship with just three races completed is not what it said in the brochure. Another light day with a fitful wind produced just one race on Wednesday in Scarlino, Italy. London 2012 - It is anticipated that Weymouth and Portland will be a major attraction during the Games, with in excess of 500,000 people expected to visit during the Sailing events. Part of the nationwide ‘Get Ahead of the Games' campaign, the new adverts will highlight the fact that roads in Dorset, particularly routes into Weymouth and Portland, will be much busier while the Games are on.... Sail-World's Richard Gladwell was on the water and followed the fleet from the start to when the fleet exited the Waitemata and headed for Cape Horn. Team Sanya led around both legs inside the Waitemata before rounding the top mark for the final time and headed off to a final rounding mark off Auckland's East Coast Bays... [more]

Sail-World's Richard Gladwell was on the water and followed the six strong fleet from the start to when the fleet exited the Waitemata and headed from Cape Horn. 2016 Equipment Evaluations - Skiffs and multihulls Day 4 + Video
Day four in Santander began with light winds which led to sailing being briefly postponed. Despite waiting for breeze, it was a productive morning for the female skiff sailors as they joined Evaluation Panel members Adrienne Cahalan (AUS) and Sylvia Vogl (AUT) in an informal session where they all gave feedback on the skiffs they'd sailed so far.... Tynemouth Sailing Club sailed the long distance Blaydon Race upstream from the Newburn Slipway on the tidal River Tyne on Sunday March 18th. Conditions were quite tricky on the first and longest lap with a generally light and very shifty wind on a fading flood tide.... [more]

Irish Fireball Frostbite Series at Dun Laoghaire Motor YC

The Fireball Frostbite Series' penultimate race at Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club was a sustained session of snakes and ladders for most of the fleet who took part in the six lap race. A reduced fleet, due probably to it being a Bank Holiday weekend with St Patrick's Day on Saturday and Mother's Day on Sunday, was set a six-lap course with the weather mark in the wind shadow... Sunday Early Points Series fourth race was held on Sunday 18th March 2012. In bright sunshine and with the promise of a moderate NW breeze, 21 competitors set off for a start out in the Solent. Entry 1000 for the XXX Garda Optimist Meeting is Aline Schmittmann, born in 1998, Junior category, sailing number Ger 12690 from Seehaupt Yacht Club. This year, the event is setting out to break a new Guinness World Record. A special commission will be arriving in Riva del Garda to officially certify the record as the regatta with the largest number of single- class boats taking part in the world.... [more]

Finn Junior and Senior European Championship - Trujillo leads

It promised much and it certainly delivered. The first day of the 2012 Finn Junior and Senior European Championship in Scarlino Italy was characterised by a shifty 8-10 knot north-westerly, moderate temperatures and some great racing. Rafa Trujillo (ESP) leads the way after placing fourth and first, with 2007 European Champion Eduard Skornyakov (RUS) in second and Florian Raudachl (AUT) in third.... [more]

Marine Massif 2012 - Academy Soloists take on impressive line-up

In the Marine Macif 2012, a total of five Artemis Offshore Academy sailors took on their very first Figaro race of the season, going up against an impressive roll call of French sailing Figaro stars. Warsash Spring Series 29th edition, organised by Warsash Sailing Club in Hampshire, got underway on a day when the wind went from zero then up to 16 knots in the short sharp squalls, both competitors and race officers needed to think quickly. Forecasts varied but in the main indicated a high pressure area over the south of England bringing light and uncertain winds to the Solent... [more]
