Velux 5 Oceans Sprint 2 is on!

The Velux 5 Oceans fleet left Cape Town earlier this morning following a race committee imposed four day postponement because of unfavorable weather conditions. Canada's Derek Hatfield on Active House, was the first to cross the line, leading the fleet on a grueling 7,000 nautical mile sprint across the Southern Ocean on their way to Wellington, New Zealand where they will sail into the famous Roaring Forties and Screaming Fifties, named so because of the sheer force of the winds that are found in those latitudes.

The 24th Phuket King's Cup regatta attracted 107 yachts representing 16 nations to the beautiful shores of Thailand last week. Mixed among the competitors were sailors of all levels from club weekend racers to America's Cup, Olympic and world champion sailors. Unfortunately, the usual range of drama on the water was replaced with abnormal conditions on the last day when the light breezes of the series were replaced by 20 knots winds and a huge swell battering the fleet as they sat at anchor off Kata Beach. Racing was canceled for the day and was replaced with a rescue mission as many yachts found themselves on the beach. Sail-World's Guy Nowell was there with his camera...

Most of the IMOCA 60 fleet is already assembled in Barcelona ahead of the December 31st start of the Barcelona World Race; only two yachts are missing but are expected over the next few days. I am edging my bets towards Virbac-Paprec with Jean-Pierre Dick, the defending champion and Loick Peyron; they will form a formidable team aboard the new VPLP-Verdier design VP 3. The same team penned the lines of Foncia, Michel Desjoyaux new yacht. Le Professeur is teaming up with François Gabart on this non-stop round-the-world event; their first double-handed race together. With two excellent Spanish teams rounding up the favorites, the race promises to be exciting!

Again this year, the Boxing Day ritual looks promising at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney, with an international fleet lining up for the start of the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The widely known event draws high-profile entrants each year—from tycoons and media moguls to Internet and telecom entrepreneurs— and this year's race is proving to be no exception. The race also attracts competitors from around the globe. The 2010 edition will see competitors from the US, UK, Russia, Italy and France. One high-profile, international entrant is Niklas Zennström, co-founder of the Internet telephony company Skype, who will be sailing on his 72-foot mini maxi Ràn.

See you soon!
