Sail-World New Zealand: 18 November 2010

Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 18 November 2010

The Last Waltz of the America's Cup Class is taking place off Dubai, UAE with the final edition of the Louis Vuitton Trophy before the America's Cup teams switch to the America's Cup World Series - expected to get underway in June 2011, in the AC45 class.

In this edition we feature reports from the end of this almost 20 year era of the America's Cup, and several image galleries which will be amongst the last we will ever see of these boats which have taken the America's Cup to a new level.

There has been a lot of flick-back from the International Sailing Federation's decision on the 2016 Olympic Events, some of which we are featuring in this edition of Sail-World. We do have some comment on and off the record, which will be compiled into our long running e-Mailbag.

Also the class associations and groups have come out in favour of their 'boat', which they have previously been able to knead into an Event.

It has transpired that the vote in Council was by a narrow majority of 19-16 to accept the slate put forward from the Events Committee, without going through it Event by Event, which of course in the game of ISAF musical chairs circles, means that they are examined Event by Class.

While we have been very focussed on the top end of the sport of late, we had the opportunity on Tuesday to take the Sail-World camera down to a group of would be sailors having a great day in a sea-breeze, within sight of the 2000-2003 America's Cup course. There were about a dozen boats on the water or waiting to go, about 25 sailors getting their first taste of the sport, and a dozen or so parents helping out. And yes, there have been at least two world champions come from Waterwise programs - who probably would not otherwise have got involved in sailing.

Devonport Waterwise - November 2010  Richard Gladwell

Thanks for your help and input, we're here to help sailing, and help those who wish to help themselves. Many thanks to those who have contributed to this edition.

Good sailing!

Richard Gladwell
NZ Editor
