'Stability' the buzzzword at FLIBS, ISS Winners, McQueen steps down
The word around the industry is 'stabilising'. On the back of the world's major big boat shows in the US and Europe, brands large and small are cautiously talking about steady growth and optimism for a 2011 to build on.
In Florida, the Miami Herald trumpeted a headline 'Spending is back in fashion', referring to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show and the lavish yachts on display there, as well as the new consumer sentiment that it's ok to spend again.
After the gloom and decline of the GFC, businesses are venturing to hire again, as consumers who can return to the market. 'People have started to hire, businesses are doing better,' explains COO of the event company that runs FLIBS , Andrew Doole. 'They're feeling more comfortable. This time last year, a lot of companies were letting a lot of people go. People couldn't be seen buying a boat when they were firing lots of staff.'
A return to a positive climate is half the battle. The next step is to woo and win consumers to the boating lifestyle, in the face of stiff competition from innumerable investments, commitments and pastimes.
This week, we profile some of the conceptual yachts that have earned accolades at Monaco and in the US, as well as a few marine businesses and how they are grappling with issues, economic and industry-related.
SYBA has announced its chairman David McQueen has stepped down, for personal reasons. David is known all over the industry locally for his work with SYBA and as MD at Azzura Marine, as well as being a familiar face to many overseas where he has promoted Australia and our industry with zeal and aplomb. Our best wishes to David.
Keep your feedback coming. Have a great week!
