Sail-World New Zealand: 8 October 2010

Welcome to's New Zealand newsletter for 8 October 2010

Plenty of action on the America's Cup scene overnight (NZT)

It would seem that despite three teams saying that the 34th America's Cup is not for them, Team New Zealand, the world's top professional sailing team, are making some very definite moves to mount in their words 'a credible challenge for the America's Cup in the multihull environment'.

We have a couple of stories in this vein, published ahead of the/any official announcements, and will keep updating as more news comes to hand.

Staying with the America's Cup, the next version of the catamaran rule has been published.

Nothing too exciting in that, except for what it doesn't say. First of which is that there seems to be no restrictions on the use of electronics. Cast your mind back to the technology debriefings given during the 33rd America's Cup. Sail-World readers will be well aware that is possible, and in fact much faster, to trim a wing sail using a computer readout device attached to the trimmer's wrist. While this might be fine and dandy for a Deed of Gift challenge in which there are no rules, save for load waterline length. Is it what we want for a multi challenger event?

The other point comes in the tail of the rule, where it specifies the media gear required on board the AC72. Again looks good in the Facebook World - but in the sailing world everyone knows Uffa Fox (should need no introduction - the Facebook Generation can Google him) who said that 'weigh is only useful in a steam roller'. (FBG's might need to Google that term too!)

We'll try and find out what is happening here with the Rules. To our mind, there doesn't seem to be a lot of point proclaiming to have fast (light) boats and then start weighing them down with cameramen, gear and batteries to power it all!

On the topic of the America's Cup, we're giving you a chance to have a say on the developments. /75526 to vent your spleen, or make constructive comment, or just click your responses to the questions - and have the chance to win a Musto fleece. So far the entries have been pouring in - with some great comments.

In the match racing in Bermuda, three New Zealand teams are competing. Blackmatch are making it hard for themselves to defend their world title, stay tuned to for all the latest updates.

Good sailing!
