One of the coolest announcements made during Monday's press conference at BMW/Oracle's Valencia base was word of the America's Cup World Series. This series, which starts in 2011 and carries through 2013, will be raced in identical 45-foot hard-wing sail cats designed by BMW/Oracle, and which are now being built in the New Zealand town of Warkworth.
The idea behind the America's Cup World Series, as well as the new Youth America's Cup (which starts in 2012), is to acquaint top-flight monohull sailors with the speeds and tactical challenges of racing wingsail speed machines. 'It's very exciting,' said BMW Oracle Racing's afterguard member Murray Jones. 'The boats are going to be very physical—grinding the sails and the daggerboards up and down in tacks is a real challenge. It's going to get everyone thinking of new ways to do things. And it's going to be exciting for the young sailors. It's good to give them an avenue into the game.'
AC45 male mould under construction - BMW Oracle Racing building facility - Warkworth NZL Richard Gladwell
Sail-world has the first sneak-preview images of their building facility in Warkworth. An impressive effort, and yet further evidence that BMW/Oracle has been playing an ambitious and meticulous behind-the-scenes chess game involving careful preparation, planning and thinking.
Compare that to your lingering-hangover memories involving Ras al-Khaimah and Alinghi's butchered handling of AC33, and it's clear that the AC game is on a far better heading.
Best yet, of course, will be official word of a San Francisco AC34, but hopefully this is just a matter of time...
Also, check out Part Two of a Sail-Word.com exclusive interview with US SAILING president, Gary Jobson, himself a widely respected sailing journalist and former America's Cup winner.
